Alesha has just returned from a buying trip to Central Australia - Alice Springs and beyond, with some wonderful new paintings.
She met up with a number of artists - some old - some new - some famous and some infamous!
This month we're featuring the work from the artists's owned co-operative at Yuendumu - Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation.
Below is a collection, we are very excited about, from a few of the artists associated with Warlukulungu Arts. Bright and vibrant colours, stunning compositions of detailed dot work, these little beauties will not last long in the gallery!!
ENJOY!

ALICE SPRINGS TRIP - August 2010
Only 2 weeks ago, Alesha travelled up to Alice Springs to pick up some new paintings for the gallery and spend some time with artists. As we work directly with many of the artists associated with the gallery, we all take turns travelling up to the red centre. This way we can engage with the artists and their families, while buying some incredible new paintings!
During this trip, Alesha was lucky enough to meet and spend time with the highly respected artists Dorothy Napangardi & George Ward Tjungarrayi - she also caught up with Betty Club Mbitjana, one of the gallery's regular artists. It was like usual, a whirl wind trip - but wonderful nevertheless!
We have some amazing new paintings, which will be available in the gallery over the next few weeks. Keep your eyes on the website for all new offerings - we've always got the right painting for the right person or occasion!

The artists of Yuendumu |

Yuendumu is located approximately 300km north west of Alice Springs. To get there, you need to drive north up the Stuart Highway for about 20km, then turn left onto the famous 'Tanami Track' - a road that deteriorates the longer you stay on it but eventually links up just south of The Kimberleys in WA.
The Tanami track is a dirt road that requires a 4wd and good suspension! If you travel about 270km up the Tanami track you will arrive at Yuendumu.
Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation is an essential part of Yuendumu's community life and has been since 1985.
Many, but not all, remote Aboriginal communities have an established art centre - these can be a great place for people to try their hand at painting and many art centres are an incubator of talent!! A lot also depends on the guidance and management of the art centre. Warlukurlangu is particularly active and has a very dynamic team whom we are very happy to support.
Apart from painting, the art centre is a place people like to gather and catch up with each other - it really is the centre of action in Yuendumu - and according to Cecilia Alfonso who is the art centre Manager, it is not unusual for upwards of one hundred people to visit the centre over a day.
If you have ever dreamed of visiting an art centre to see where the art comes from in a really authentic situation we would highly recommend a visit to Yuendumu. It is possible to drive to Yuendumu and back to Alice Springs in a day (a big day) and unless there is sorry business going on at Yuendumu (check the day before) you will be welcome to visit this community. Let us know if you're interested and we'll put you in touch with the right people.
